When you start a project it seems complicated. I don’t even remember why I started this project. Likely I just wanted to make something.

For this robot, I’ve tried to keep the hardware easily accessible. The main components are two stepper motors and stepper motor drivers (as commonly found in 3D printers), an ESP32, and a battery. Mechanical hardware can be 3D printed. The whole design is open source, and available at: https://gitlab.com/kloppertje/balancingrobot
This is one of the few projects I’ve reasonably (far from perfectly) documented online. It is a rewarding process! Regularly I get feedback from people all over the world who have built a robot based/inspired on my design. One of my favourites is an adaptation that can climb up a step:
Another use case that I’m a fan of is the soccer adaptation. We use a team of robots on a soccer field on events such as the Maker Days Eindhoven
